The Diary of Anne Frank is a performance that combines dramatic and puppet theatre. The inhabitants of the Secret Annex – the Frank and Van Daan families, who spent two years in hiding from Nazi persecution – will be portrayed through dramatic theatre, while their dreams of freedom, escape and a happy future that they would never live to see will be brought to life through puppetry.
In this way, a theatrical synergy emerges between the brutality of what actually happened and the way we imagine these people managing to endure so much time in a small, claustrophobic space, hoping to be rescued through their dreams and their faith in humanity and justice.
In doing so, we also seek to fulfil the main mission of performances such as this one: to “rescue” the victims of war from the obscurity of statistics – from the numbers of those killed and those who perished in concentration camps and on battlefields – and to show that every victim of every war throughout history had their own identity, their own human dreams, longings and hopes. They were just like any one of us, except that their lives were brutally cut short by distorted ideologies and political regimes. (Stevan Bodroza, director)
